Old Fashioned Bread Pudding

·

I’m not really a dessert person, but I love to make them. Sometimes though, I don’t really feel like making a whole pumpkin spiced cheesecake or tiramisu, so I make bread pudding instead!

I don’t know the origin of bread pudding, all I know that it tastes good, easy to make, and is an amazing dish on its own. I hope you enjoy!

Yields Roughly 9 servings in a 8 x 8 pan

Ingredients:

  • 6 Slices of Bread
  • 4 Large Eggs
  • 2/3 cup Light Brown Sugar
  • 1/3 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 2/3 tsp Nutmeg
  • 2 cup Dairy (Milk, Half and Half, or Heavy Cream)
  • 1.5 tbsp Cinnamon Powder

Tips:

  • There are also 45 calorie bread slices that can significantly reduce the calories and carbs in this recipe.
  • By technicality, you CAN use any type of bread. In my humble opinion however, you want to use potato, white, or brioche.
  • Use stale or dehydrated bread! If you’re confused on how, heat them in an oven around 150-200°F, and leave them there until they become dehydrated. You don’t want to cook the bread, just dehydrate it.

Steps:

  • Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F
  • Step 2: Grease up your pan with a little bit of butter. Pull apart your bread into pieces and place them into the pan. You don’t need it to be even, it’s fine if some pieces are bigger than others
  • Step 3: In a separate bowl, mix in the eggs, dairy, granulated sugar, 1/3 of brown sugar, nutmeg, and vanilla extract.
  • Step 4: Pour that mixture on top of the bread and let it sit there for 8-10 minutes. Sprinkle the remaining brown sugar over the bread pudding and bake in the oven for around 35-40 minutes.
  • Step 5: Take it out the oven, let it sit until room temperature, and you’re done! You can eat it warm or cold, and it’s even better if you make a caramel sauce with it!
