Snezhnaya is right around the corner, and my primos aren’t ready.
Yes I play Genshin Impact, yes I somewhat like the game, yes I’m excited, no I don’t have enough money in the world for the next couple of patches.
I make a whole lot of recipes, hell even recipes that take days. This, I am NEVER making this again. Yes, even for my friends who read this; it’s gotta be your birthday or somethin for you to even have the nerve of requesting such a thing. T
It looks so cute, but I think my brain turned off 12 different times while trying to figure out how NOT to make it look chopped. Beauty is pain, and I took a whole lotta pain to make this look beautiful. It also took like… 4ish hours? In all honesty though, I personally messed up and ran out of rice. If I didn’t, I coulda done it in two.
I did have a lot of help from this video. While I didn’t use all of their ingredients and techniques, it was a great foundation and visual representation of what I wanted to achieve. If you want to make this recipe (and even if you don’t), PLEASE watch their video. Huge shoutout to them.
Also, I’m not doing a macro estimate on this twin😭
Ingredients :
Rice
- 200 g cooked rice
- Light soy sauce
- water
- Dark soy sauce
Additions and Decorations
- 6 pieces of Kale
- Spam
- Cherry Tomatoes
- Dried Seaweed
- 2 slices of American/Cheddar cheese
- 3 eggs (hard boiled for 9-10 minutes)
- 1 tbsp cooking oil
- Onigiri
Tips:
- You’re gonna want to have some spares ready just incase you make a mistake. You will be fine with a can of spam and kale, but I messed up with rice molding the most by FAR.
- Precision is a necessity. This includes scissors, tweezers, and sharp knives.
- PLEASE watch their video as a lot of things in the steps are explained there in much better detail.
- Adding too much soy sauce after the rice has been cooked will make the soy sauce sooooo much harder to work with. A little goes a long way.
- You need a small bowl for a shaping-mold, and plastic wrap. I can’t think of a single alternative for this.
Steps:
Rice
- Divide your rice as shown below. In making the light and dark features, add roughly a tsp of light and dark soy sauce in batches until the desired color. Don’t add too much, or it will be difficult to manage.
- 60% Plain White
- 20% Light-brown
- 5% Dark Brown
- 15% Reserved Plain (Just incase)
Eggs:
- Peel your eggs, slice them lengthwise, and set the halves aside. thickened. Precisely cut out paw pads on each of the halves in the white parts of the egg, then fill them in with the yellow yolk.
Spam:
- Before frying the spam, divide the spam in half.
- First Half: Cut the spam to resemble the cat ears, tongue, and the 3 claws on each paw. Make these as thin as possible (if possible). Do not cook these.
- Second Half: Cut two spam slabs around half an inch thick, and score them with “grill marks”. In a pan with oil over medium high heat, cook them for 3 to 5 minutes (roughly a minute and half on each side) or until slightly browned.
Nori:
- Using cleaned kitchen scissors, cut your dried seaweed into very small pieces. You’ll need…
- 2 tiny circles for eyes
- 4 thin strips for whiskers
- Additional face details
- 2 even tinier pieces for the cheese fishes’ eyes
Cheese:
- Using a knife, cut the cheese into fish-like shapes.
Assembly:
- Step 1: On a plate, carefully pile with pieces of kale, and make sure at least the middle is flattened while the edges are bloomed
- Step 2: In a bowl with plastic film, wet your hands very lightly with salt and water. Take a good amount of plain white rice and press it against the edges. Then, place in your onigiri, and add in the remainder of the white rice to make a thick oval mound.
- Step 3: Carefully place this rice mold on the kale bed and decorate it with the dark and light brown rice (fur). Then, carefully cover with plastic wrap and squeeze gently for a couple minutes in ensuring that the rice molds together.
- Step 4: Create a mold for the ears and place them on the head. Wait a couple of minutes, then apply the pink triangle spam ears
- Step 5: Take the remaining rice and make it into rounded paws, place them in front of the cat and slightly flatten them so the spam claws have somewhere to sit. Gently add 3 claws to each paw.
- Step 6: Add your nori eyes, whispers, and spam pink tongue with a nori flap. It’s best to use tweezers for this.
- Step 7: Arrange the eggs, cheese, and tomatoes, tucking them in between the cat and kale. Add nori eyes to the fish-shaped cheese cuts, and you’re done! I hope you feel invigorated!
