Give Me Back My Bodily Autonomy

I typically don’t do post as heavy as this topic for the purpose of retaining the “comforting space” aspect, but I truly can not have a comforting space if I don’t address things that bring discomfort, can I?

I wish her nothing but safety to the woman who was raped at Cornell University by 7 different students and encouraged to not speak of it; and I hope the absolute worst for the 57 students along with all of those involved who didn’t say a damn word. With that said, universities all over America structurally have an issue of preventing and especially failing at addressing bodily harm and autonomy to victims. In highlighting how problematic this is, I compiled a list of sexual abuse and/or rape incidents from all 50 states in as much detail as I could find. I also did not use artificial intelligence for this research, as topics like this deserves a level of attention that should be humane. I will be doing it in parts, as writing all of this will take some time.

I also don’t want any big social media attention, money, or praise from this; I couldn’t care less (no disrespect). In a heartbeat, I would trade that all if it meant an end from this type of horrific mistreatment on others.

All sources of my research will be cited under each section of the state (not in order of the incidents), along with definitions to words and legal contexts if necessary. In addition, I will provide two or three incidents that I can find. Even though there are most certainly more, that’s just within the scope of what my physical abilities are.

Here are some quick definitions that are going to pop up consistently:

Sodomy: A specific sexual act meaning oral and/or anal sex.
Voyeurism: The act of secretly watching or recording unsuspecting people who are either naked, undressing, or engaging in private activities, usually for sexual pleasure and/or enjoyment.
Acquaintance Rape: Sexual assault or rape committed by someone the victim knows.

Last but not least, these are the incidents I could find, and I encourage you to find the ones that I couldn’t. With that said, keep in mind these are the incidents we know about. There is less that we know than of which we don’t.

Alabama:

Jacksonville State University (JSU) 2019 Rape: A total of 12 men were arrested and charged in September and October of 2019 in connection with a statutory rape and sodomy1 investigation involving two underage girls. The victims were between the ages of 12 and 16, and officials stated the underage girls initiated the communication via social media platforms, and then traveled onto JSU campus or relative areas to meet the men.

University of Alabama (UoA) (Tuscaloosa):

August 2015: A 29 y/o man was arrested and charged with first-degree kidnapping and first-degree rape after a sexual assault occurred following the victim’s acceptance of a fake church sober ride.
The victim stated she was in the area of The Strip and approached by an unknown white male in a white vehicle, who stated he was part of a church organization providing sober rides for people that were in need of one. She then accepted the ride from the man, taken to an unknown area and restricted access from getting out the vehicle, and proceeded to commit a forcible act. The victim was able to force the suspect to stop and flee the scene.

July 2024: A 23 y/o former UoA student was charged with first-degree rape, sodomy, and multiple counts of voyeurism2 after the victim reported waking up with no memory of the night before. Investigators then recovered digital photographic evidence showing the assault occurred while the victim was unconscious.

Alaska:

University of Alaska Fairbanks:

April 1993: In April of 1993, 20 y/o Sophie Sergie was found dead in a bathtub in a dormatory of Bartlett Hall. She had been raped, shot, stabbed, and shocked with a stun gun. This case had remained unsolved for over 26 years until investigators used genetic genealogy DNA in 2019 to link Steven Downs to the crime. Downs was a freshman and dorm resident in the university, and a jury found him guilty of rape and murder in February of 2022.

September 2016: A 19 y/o sophomore Jessie Wattum reported that she was raped in Bartlett Hall and stated that a male student had sex with her while she was incapacitated3 by alcohol; unable to give consent. UAF completed the Title IX investigation, but the local district attorney declined to file charges because the state could not prove the assault happened beyond a reasonable doubt.

Editors Note: Arizona State University and UArizona, genuinely what the fuck. Whenever I hear about these universities, it’s never positive, and the first time I heard about it WAS FOR all the SA’s and rapes going on at fraternities. Matter of fact, they get their own sections. I want to report every incident, but I gotta to the other 47 states.

University of Arizona:

September 2021: The university issued a loss-of-recognition status to the PIKE fraternity following multiple violations which included a hospital-reported allegation of sexual assault involving a 19 y/o student after a house gathering. She was pinned and assaulted after consuming alcohol at the house.

August/February 2024: A 19 y/o UArizona student was indicted on a felony of sexual assault following the Sigma Alpha Mu frat house. The woman told the police that she ran out the room, leaving her shoes behind, and the police noted visible marks and bruising on her body.

The Darnel Henderson Case of 2004: A first year student (mentioned in court as “J.K.”) was raped in her dorm room by an ASU football player, Darnel Henderson. Henderson was disciplined for sexual harassment during a summer program, BUT WAS READMITTED BY THE ATHELTIC DEPARTMENT. ASU later settled a civil Title IX lawsuit for $850,000 in 2009. This resulted in stricter Title IX implementations across the university after they were under-fire for this incident.

October 2019: An ASU student was raped in her residential hall on the Tempe campus after meeting the suspect via social media. The victim told police that the suspect gained her trust, and while in her dorm, sexually assaulted her.

Katie Hinda also stated she was raped by a teammate.

Zachary Roper: CU Boulder was arrested and accused of raping an incapacitated female student at his apartment after an Uber driver redirected her passed-out body away from her sorority house.
